The fast pace of modern life affects everyone. Most people have busy schedules, and many appointments must adhere to the minute. It’s not surprising that sometimes, dental hygiene can fall by the wayside. However, this is counterproductive, as dealing with cavities and other dental issues can take up much more time in the long run. While taking care of your own dental hygiene at home is possible, nothing beats the skill and expertise of a professional dentist. For that reason, regular dental cleanings are a crucial part of maintaining proper oral health.
At Greenwood Dental Care, we understand that dental appointments can be intimidating. Add to that the fact that people often worry about the time and cost, and many become reluctant to schedule regular dental cleanings. Our professional dental team is committed to making your dental cleanings as comfortable and effective as possible. We do our best to make each cleaning quick and painless.
If you have noticed that brushing and flossing don’t leave your mouth feeling as fresh as before, it may be time to schedule a cleaning appointment. Contact us at 855.528.3961 to learn more about what we offer.
Why Are Dental Cleanings Important?
Oral health starts at home with thorough brushing and flossing. However, even the most careful people will miss spots when brushing their teeth. There are other areas between teeth and under the gumline that toothbrushes and floss cannot reach. Occasionally, plaque and tartar will have hardened and cannot be removed without professional techniques and equipment. The plaque and tartar can eventually lead to tooth decay and more serious dental issues if left unchecked.
The good news is that most patients will only need a standard dental prophylaxis cleaning (which is a standard cleaning procedure) if they schedule regular appointments and stay on top of their oral health.
How Long Do Dental Cleanings Take?
Most standard dental cleanings will finish within 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how much work is needed. However, the process may take longer if the cleaning is more specialized. The major types of cleaning are:
- Prophylaxis – A standard cleaning procedure
- Gross debridement – A procedure done to assess the health of teeth and gums
- Scaling and root planing – A deeper dental cleaning procedure for those prone to gum issues
It’s best to walk through the process in its entirety to understand why dental cleanings take this long. Before the cleaning begins, the dental hygienist will first examine the patient’s teeth using a small mirror. This process happens so that they can spot any problem areas before starting. By identifying tartar buildup, plaque, dark spots, or gum inflammation, they know which parts of the mouth to target and what processes they must do. This examination also lets them catch more serious issues that may need to be addressed separately from the cleaning.
Now the cleaning can begin in earnest. The hygienist will use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth and along the gumline. Once this step finishes, they will apply a prophylaxis paste to the teeth and then polish them to remove any stains. Finally, the hygienist will use floss to remove any remaining paste from between the teeth. Optionally, there may also be a fluoride treatment to improve tooth health and reduce the risk of cavities.
Note that the 30 to 60-minute figure is only for standard cleanings. More complicated procedures will extend this time.
